LexisNexis Canada’s Success with Augmentation Model for Mainframe Environment

LexisNexis has the largest database in the world, and even overtakes that of the Library of Congress. Undoubtedly, as an organization riding on such an ambitious path, the company has distinct IT requirements.

New technologies are changing the way legal professionals do business and LNC’s objective is to build solutions that are ever more intuitive and efficient to use. The company’s challenge was to find sales, servicing and technical support in its Mainframe environment – a difficult-to-source skill set. Many employees supporting Mainframe are nearing retirement age, and new talent is not easy to find. The associated challenge for LNC was to fill this talent gap in a cost-effective manner.

The solution was identified in partnering with GHS in an augmentation model to the company’s existing Mainframe Support team. GHS provides a costeffective solution to this rare skill set, thereby helping LNC to keep up its competitive advantage. “GHS has always been innovative and sensitive to our requirements. We strongly value our relationship with GHS and what they add to our organization,” says Steve Harvey, Head of IT, LexisNexis Canada.

LNC has used the IBM mainframe platform since the purchase of Quicklaw Inc. in 1972. LNC has an IBM zEnterprise mainframe and attached IBM System Storage DS8870. The company currently uses WebSphere Liberty supporting web access to their comprehensive legal data that resides on their mainframe infrastructure. Their z114 runs multiple logical partitions, with a test logical partition for development and testing, and a Parallel Sysplex for the Production and Quality Assurance logical partitions.

LNC also uses “soft capping” to manage the software costs. Web browser users search the LNC database of Canadian legal decisions using a very fast text search engine that retrieves cases to match the search arguments and illustrates the current status of the decision. A group of legal trained editors work around the clock to add new decisions to the database, and annotate them with a legal summary to assist searches and also trace the citations.

GHS has been LNC’s trusted technology partner for over 10 years, and provides sales, servicing, and technical support to the company’s mainframe environment.
